National Policy on Electronics 2019 to make India a Global Hub

GUWAHATI: The Union Cabinet approved the proposal of National Policy on Electronics 2019 on February 19. The policy which was proposed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) envisions to position India as a global hub for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) to encourage and drive capabilities in the country to develop core components and create an enabling environment for the industry so that it can compete globally. 

This policy aims to promote domestic manufacturing and export in the entire value-chain of ESDM for economic development to achieve a turnover of USD 400 billion (approximately INR 26,00,000 crore) by 2025. 

The policy states that it will include a targeted production of 100 crore mobile handsets by 2025, valued at approximately INR 13,00,000 crore and 60 crore mobile handsets valued at approximately INR 7,00,000 crore for export.

The passing of the policy will allow for flow of investment and technology, which will lead to higher value addition in the domestically manufactured electronic products, increased electronics hardware manufacturing in the country and their export, while generating substantial employment opportunities.

The National Policy of Electronics 2019 (NPE 2019) replaces the National Policy of Electronics 2012 (NPE 2012).
