GUWAHATI: The death toll from the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck near Mandalay on Friday, March 28, has risen to over 1,600, with 3,400 people injured and 139 still missing. As rescue operations continue, a 5.1-magnitude aftershock struck the region on Sunday, March 30, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), complicating efforts to reach survivors.

The powerful earthquake caused widespread destruction, collapsing buildings, damaging roads, and rupturing bridges. Rescue efforts are ongoing in Mandalay and Naypyitaw, with local volunteers and emergency teams tirelessly searching for survivors. However, operations are hindered by limited access to affected areas and a shortage of heavy machinery.

International aid has poured in from neighboring countries, including India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Russia, providing relief supplies, rescue teams, and emergency personnel.

In Thailand, the earthquake caused 17 deaths, 32 injuries, and 83 people unaccounted for, primarily due to the collapse of a 30-story tower block under construction in Bangkok.

The epicenter near Mandalay was followed by multiple aftershocks, the strongest reaching magnitude 6.4, further compounding the devastation. Additionally, reports indicate a ruptured dam, raising concerns about potential flooding and hazards in already vulnerable areas.
