More Demands From NIT Students After ‘Removal’ Of Dean

GUWAHATI: Amidst the ongoing protest following the death of a student, the Dean of NIT Silchar, Binoy Krishna Roy, has been “removed” from dean’s office indefinitely. The students still have raised various other issues and have put forth a host of demands on September 23.

According to sources, the NIT students have now put forth a list of demands through a memorandum. The recent demands state that the students have asked for an official apology from the college administration.

The students also demanded the permanent removal of the Dean in question B K Roy.

A demand has also been made to register an official FIR along with a thorough probe into the death of Koj Buker.
Students also demanded that no disciplinary action should be taken by the college administration against the students who took part in the protest.

All disciplinary actions are to be reviewed to safeguard the mental well-being of the students, as per the demand.

Additionally, a request has been put in to constitute a committee to bring in academic reforms in the college.

Sources told G Plus that the Assistant Dean has been asked to step in as the Dean after Roy’s “removal”.

The students of NIT Silchar started an indefinite hunger strike on Monday demanding the resignation of the Dean, Binoy Krishna Roy, post which various protests took place till date.

The situation in the NIT Silchar campus turned hostile following the incident of the death of a student in the electrical department on September 16.

The electrical department student, identified as Koj Bukar, allegedly committed suicide.

The body was found hanging under mysterious circumstances from a window inside the NIT hostel campus.

It came to the fore that the engineering student had a backlog of several subjects, and the NIT authorities did not allow him to register for the third year until he cleared his backlog.

Following this, the student reportedly decided to meet NIT Academic Dean BK Roy seeking help on the matter.

But, his concerns were allegedly not taken into consideration.

The agitated students pelted stones at police personnel and vandalised the government quarter and vehicles including the private vehicle of NIT’s academic Dean BK Roy, as per reports.

The police had to resort to a lathi charge to bring the situation under control.

Several students as well as police were injured in the incident.

The students have withdrawn the stir after the authorities claimed that the dean in question was removed, said a student of the institute.

A source in the NIT said that Roy will keep teaching but for now he is removed from the designation of dean.
