Monsoon Shower to play Spoilsport this Rongali Bihu?

Given the inclement weather prevailing over the city over the past two days, the normal pre-Bihu shopping activities are yet to take off bringing a cloud of apprehension among the traders, retailers, and customers alike.

Bohaag Bihu, the festival of harvest, besides bringing joy, always gives an opportunity to every Assamese to head for the nearest market on shopping jaunts to grab their favourite apparels. It is that time of the year when the local markets are flooded with hand-woven traditional pieces of clothes like Mekhela-Chador and Gamocha.

But since the last two days, the weather has been upsetting the Bihu spirit of both the shoppers and the market.

The bad weather might prove to be a hindrance to the normal shopping sprees.

Speaking to G Plus, a salesperson at NEDFI fair said, "The weather during this time cannot be predicted. The sales pick up when it's a good weather. It again goes sluggish when the weather is bad."

Like the previous two years, this year too has seen an upscale demand of Buwa Mekhela Chador. Mekhela Chador and other dresses made of Gamosa motifs are the new trends in the market.
