Mohammed Shami Creates IPL History With Fourth First-Ball Wicket

GUWAHATI: Sunrisers Hyderabad's experienced pacer Mohammed Shami has created history at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai by becoming the first bowler in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to claim a wicket on the first ball of an innings four times.

During the IPL 2025 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings on Friday, April 25, Shami dismissed CSK's young opener Shaik Rasheed with a perfect seam-up delivery that moved away from the off-stump. Rasheed attempted a punch shot but edged it to Abhishek Sharma at slips.

This dismissal added to Shami’s growing list of first-ball wickets, following earlier scalps of Jacques Kallis (Dubai, 2014), KL Rahul (Wankhede, 2022), and Phil Salt (Ahmedabad, 2023).

Relatedly, the match had begun with SRH captain Pat Cummins opting to bowl first after winning the toss at Chepauk.

Meanwhile, CSK’s youthful opening pair of Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre also created a unique record. They became only the fourth under-21 opening partnership in IPL history, joining previous combinations such as Sanju Samson-Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill-Tom Banton, and Abhishek Sharma-Priyam Garg. The duo's combined age of 38 years and 131 days makes them the second-youngest opening pair in IPL history.

They narrowly missed the top spot, which is held by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who recorded a combined age of 37 years and 135 days earlier in 2025 during a match against Lucknow Super Giants at Jaipur.
