The controversy first came to light when filmmaker Alishan Jafri spotlighted the merchandise on social media, describing it as an example of "India's latest online radicalisation." The T-shirts, featuring Bishnoi’s face and the word “gangster,” were available for as low as ₹168.
The backlash further intensified as many pointed out that some of the items were marketed towards children, raising concerns about the promotion of criminal figures to younger audiences.
In response, Meesho reportedly pulled the products from its platform and issued a statement addressing the incident. The platform has reportedly expressed regret for the oversight, and reaffirmed its commitment to providing “a safe and trusted shopping platform” for its users.
Punjab-born Lawrence Bishnoi has come to light recently for his death threats against Bollywood actor Salman Khan, and the alleged killing of singer Sidhu Moosewalla, as well as the implicated murder of Maharashtra’s former minister Baba Siddique.
