Mary Kom to debut in 51kg at India Open boxing tournament in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: London Olympic bronze medallist Mary Kom will make her competitive debut in 51kg category in the second edition of India Open boxing tournament, to be held in Guwahati from May 20-24 at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Sarusajai.

It should be mentioned that Assam's Shiva Thapa (60kg), who created record by winning medals in four consecutive Asian Championships, will take part in the tournament. Ankushita Boro (64kg), a gold medallist at the 2017 World Youth Championship, will also  participate in the event.

Lovlina Borgohain and several others are also expected to participate in the competition.

Hemanta Kalita, general secretary of Assam Boxing Association (ABA), reportedly said that several international boxers from 25 countries are set to take part in the tournament.

India Open will witness the participation of 35 men and 37 women boxers from India, while close to 200 pugilists from 16 boxing powerhouses will participate in the USD 70,000 tournament.
