Under the new rule, areas within 5-kilometer of any iconic structure over 250 years old will be notified as Heritage Belts and Blocks.

However, the entire district of  Majuli will be recognised as a Heritage Block due to its historical importance.

In these notified areas, only residents who have lived there for at least three generations will be permitted to buy or sell land.

The initial sites to be protected include Barpeta Sattra, Batadrava Than, and Majuli, with the government planning to include additonal iconic structures in the future.
