According to an IMD report on January 7, thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by hail are very likely to occur at isolated locations in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya along with other parts of NE over the week.  Dense fog is also expected at isolated places across Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram over these three days, potentially impacting visibility during early mornings and late evenings.

Light to moderate rain is expected over parts of Assam, Manipur, Arunachal & Nagaland over the first three days.
Such weather trends throughout the week depict dropping temperatures, making the upcoming Magh Bihu a colder affair.  Residents have already started making preparations for Bhogali, with mejis, pithas, and larus being made.

The first rainfall of 2025 was experienced from around 8:00 PM on Tuesday in different areas of the city, bringing the overall mercury levels down. Light winds and lightning also occurred through hours into the night.

With the warm festivities of Bihu on the way, it remains to be seen as to how the people of the city and Assam react to the onset of the winter rains and adapt their celebrations accordingly.
