Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi Appointed New Army Chief

 

 

GUWAHATI: The Centre appointed Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi as the next Army Chief on Tuesday, June 11. This came just over two weeks after the the government in an unusual move extended the tenure of current Army chief General Manoj Pande who was to retire on May 31, by a month.

Lt Gen Dwivedi will now take over the new appointment from the afternoon of June 30, 2024, when Gen Pande demits office. The former Northern Army Commander has emerged as the top contender for the position of Army Chief.

With a distinguished career spanning over four decades, the senior officer has held various key roles, including Command of Regiment and Brigade, Inspector General of Assam Rifles, and Director General Infantry. The Army chief retires on completion of three years in the appointment or on attaining the age of 62, whichever is earlier.

Having served as the General Officer Commanding in Chief of the Northern Command from 2022 to 2024, the officer's credentials are highly regarded within military circles. Notably, he has been appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, further solidifying his candidature for the top post.

An alumni of prestigious institutions like the Sainik School Rewa and the National Defence College, the officer's academic prowess is evident with an impressive array of qualifications, including an M Phil in Defence and Management Studies and two Master’s Degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
