Lok Sabha MPs from Assam take oath in Assamese

GUWAHATI: The linguistic diversity of India was on full display in the Lok Sabha as the newly elected members of parliament took their oaths in various regional languages. 

Most of the Assam MPs including union cabinet minister Rameshwar Teli, Queen Oja, Kripanath Mallah and Naba Kumar Saranai took oaths in Assamese. They were also sporting the axomiya gamocha while taking the oath.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took oath in Hindi,  Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy took oath in Bengali and Harsh Vardhan, Meenakshi Lekhi (both MPs from Delhi) as well as first-timer Pratap Chandra Sarangi took the oath in Sanskrit.

The oath-taking ceremony of members of the 17th Lok Sabha commenced on Monday and the elected MPs from Assam have taken the oath in Assamese as the Lok Sabha Secretariat has provided online formats of the oath or affirmation in all 22 languages in which the members can take the oath.
