L&T to construct 7 cancer hospitals in Assam

GUWAHATI: Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the multinational conglomerate, has been entrusted with the task of construction of first phase of seven cancer hospitals in Assam, announced state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday, June 6 during a press conference.

He mentioned that the entire project cost stands at Rs 736 crores.

“After the entire tender process based on lowest rate, L&T has been given the order of construction of seven government hospitals,” announced Sarma.   

He added that in the first phase, new cancer hospitals will be constructed in Dibrugarh, Tezpur, Lakhimpur, Barpeta, Jorhat, Darrang and upgradation will be done for Guwahati cancer hospital.

Sarma further mentioned that the construction work is set to begin from August onwards.

Additionally, in the second phase three more hospitals will be constructed in the state.

Last year, Assam government had set up a non-profit foundation for cancer research and treatment in collaboration with Tata Trusts. It is known as Assam Cancer Care Foundation. The foundation was set up to provide three-tier cancer treatment in the state.

It was set up with a 50-50 partnership of government of Assam and Tata Trust.

Further, the foundation stone for 19 cancer care centres across the state was laid in June 2018.
