GUWAHATI: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi on Wednesday, March 13 criticized the leaders of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for their decision on contesting the Lok Sabha Elections together with BJP. “We condemn the AGP-BJP alliance,” said Gogoi, while addressing media in Guwahati.
He slammed the regional party for their alliance with the saffron party even though the latter had clearly voiced for another Citizenship (Amendment) Bill if voted to power.
“AGP has betrayed the people of Assam so the KMSS will oppose the AGP-BJP alliance in the Lok Sabha elections.”
Gogoi also said that the AGP must now clear its stand on the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. "The AGP leaders must make it public whether they had signed an agreement with the BJP to support the Bill, which is likely to be tabled again if the BJP is voted to power," he said.
Earlier, on January 7th, 2019, the AGP withdrew its support to the BJP government in Assam in protest against the Centre’s decision to go ahead with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. On January 9th, 2019, Assam Agriculture Minister Bora, Assam Water Resources Minister Keshav Mahanta, Assam Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury tendered their resignations. Two months after pulling out over the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the AGP and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are back as allies in poll-bound Assam.
