Each committee has been assigned specific areas under the GMC jurisdiction by the Department of Urban & Housing Affairs, Assam (DoHUA). The teams will monitor desiltation efforts in key rivers such as the Bahini, Bharalu, Mora Bharalu, and Lakhimijaan, along with major and minor drains. Additionally, they will oversee desiltation work in various GMC wards.
The monitoring teams will also ensure proper execution of desiltation work carried out by contractors as per contract conditions. Additionally, they will interact with the public to gather feedback on the progress of the Mission Flood Free initiative.
Along with the mentioned responsibilities, the committees will establish a grievance reception mechanism, allowing residents to report any issues related to the desiltation work. Complaints received will be forwarded to the relevant authorities for necessary action.
The initiative has been implemented under Section 30(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, as it aims to mitigate urban flooding risks in Guwahati. The GMC will coordinate with the monitoring teams to ensure efficient execution of the desiltation process as monsoon looms on the horizon.
