Kamrup (M) tops list in recording crimes against women in Assam

GUWAHATI: Kamrup (Metro) district has topped the list in recording crimes against women in Assam with 237 cases, which was followed by Kamrup (rural) with 125 cases, according to a report by the Times of India. 

Half of the total cases registered are of domestic violence, and they are responded to immediately and provided assistance.   

A toll-free 24x7 helpline number for women in distress, “181-Sakhi” received 1,214 complaints for crimes against women in Assam, its first 14 months of operation. 

The helpline started on March 15 last year and a total of 1,218 cases have been registered so far, out of which 1,214 were cases of crimes against women and 30 were of crimes against elderly women, and four cases were regarding social welfare. 

The toll-free helpline number was launched in the state by Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal and is part of a scheme under the Union ministry of women and child development. 

The helpline has been established to provide emergency response to women in distress who are affected by violence and to provide access to all state service authorities such as police, legal services authority, protection officers and counselling centres.
