Kalapahar, Names Of Other Places In Guwahati Will Be Renamed: CM Sarma

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government will be changing names of places in Guwahati that are not in consonance with the culture and tradition of the State.

Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma, while speaking at the Bhoomi Poojan of the second medical college in Guwahati said that certain places in the city including Kalaphar and other towns and villages across Assam will be renamed.

“There are several places in Assam which people do not feel comfortable uttering. Certain names of places are seen as derogatory to some communities and this must change,” Assam CM said.

Moreover, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Kalapahar was a Muslim General of the Bengal Sultanate and had attacked the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati.

“ Kalapahar had destroyed the Kamakhya Temple. I don’t see a reason why any town should be named Kalaphar. This name must be removed and I have also urged Ramendra Narayan Kalita to consult with the people and suggest a suitable name,” the CM added.
