GUWAHATI: The Centre on Sunday approved the appointment of Justice Sandeep Mehta of Rajasthan High Court as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sandeep Mehta, Judge of the High Court of Rajasthan to be the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office," stated a notification posted on the website of Ministry of Law & Justice.
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Mehta's appointment as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on February 8.
On May 30, 2011, Justice Mehta was appointed to the Rajasthan High Court as a judge.
He is scheduled to leave the bench on January 10, 2025.
The Collegium had previously decided to name Justice K Vinod Chandran as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. However, the same was overturned by means of a different resolution, and Justice Chandran's appointment as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court was suggested instead.
As a result, the Collegium decided to endorse Justice Mehta's appointment because they thought he was qualified.
Prior to being promoted to the bench, Justice Mehta enrolled as an advocate on August 8, 1986. He practised law before trial courts, the High Court, and the Supreme Court.
From 2004 to 2005, he was the Bar Council of Rajasthan's vice chairman. In 2010, he was the organization's chairman.
