GUWAHATI: Sharjeel Imam, a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student, who was accused of sedition, has been arrested in Bihar.

The research scholar from JNU was arrested from his hometown Jehenabad, Bihar just a few hours after the Bihar police picked up his brother for questioning.
Reports stated that Imam will be brought to Delhi after which his questioning will begin. Reports also suggest that his family has denied the allegations of sedition.

His mother told the media that he was "not a law-breaker and would surrender to the investigating agencies".

"Nobody should do anything that is not in the interest of the nation. The accusations and the arrest - the court will decide on the matter," said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after the arrest, as per ANI.

Imam is allegedly one of the organisers of the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at Shaheen Bagh. A few days ago, he had said that their main aim is to cut off Assam and northeast from India.

He had said that Muslims are in such great numbers that they can cut out the entire Northeast from the rest of India.

Referring to the Chicken Neck corridor in Siliguri, which connects India to the northeast, Imam asked people to join in large numbers and block the railway tracks and roads.

“If we all come together, then we can separate the north-east from India. If not permanently, then at least for one to two months we can do this. It will take the administration at least one month to disperse all of them. It is our responsibility to cut Assam from India. When this will happen, only then the centre will listen to us,” said Imam.

Meanwhile, the Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have lodged an FIR against him.
