JEE Advanced 2025 Attempt Limit Up To Three, Eligibility Criteria Revised

GUWAHATI: The number of allowed attempts for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced has been raised from two to three, effective this year. According to new guidelines, candidates may now attempt JEE Advanced up to three times within three consecutive years. Previously, the limit was restricted to two attempts across two consecutive years.

Age and Other Eligibility Criteria:

The age requirement remains: candidates must be born on or after October 1, 2000, with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST, and PwD candidates, allowing those born on or after October 1, 1995, to be eligible. Other qualifications for JEE Advanced 2025 remain unchanged. To be eligible, candidates must rank among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates across all categories in the JEE Main 2025 BE/BTech paper (Paper I). However, the number of candidates could exceed 2.5 lakh due to possible ties in ranks or scores within categories.

Reservation and Seat Allocation:

The percentage breakdown of candidates to be shortlisted by category is as follows:
- 10% for GEN-EWS
- 27% for OBC-NCL
- 15% for SC
- 7.5% for ST
- 40.5% as OPEN (for all candidates)

Within each category, there is a 5% horizontal reservation for PwD candidates. Following a Supreme Court ruling (February 3, 2023), OCI/PIO candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO cards before March 4, 2021, will be considered Indian nationals for seat allocation to IITs, although they are not eligible for category-based reservations, except under OPEN-PwD.

Class 12 Eligibility for JEE Main 2025:

Candidates must have completed their Class 12 (or equivalent) exams for the first time in 2023, 2024, or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as required subjects. Those who took their Class 12 exams for the first time in 2022 or earlier are not eligible, regardless of subjects. However, candidates from boards that released Class 12 results for the 2021-22 academic year on or after September 21, 2022, can still qualify if they meet all other criteria.

Candidates who have previously joined an IIT program under JoSAA rules up to 2024 are not eligible to take JEE Advanced 2025, even if they discontinued the program or didn’t physically attend. However, candidates enrolled in a preparatory course at an IIT for the first time in 2024 can attempt JEE Advanced 2025. Those who accepted an IIT seat through JoSAA but either withdrew before the last seat allocation round or had their seat cancelled are also eligible to apply.
