Dr Bhaskar Choudhury, the lead veterinarian at the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC), told GPlus on Monday, November 25 that the tigress has lost its sight in the right eye while efforts were being made to restore sight in the left eye.
“It is in a critical condition. The loss of vision in the right eye is permanent, but treatment is underway to restore some sight in the left eye,” he said.
Besides, the tigress also suffered fractures in the nose bone and the head after being hit by stones. “Once its physiological functioning is hampered it cannot survive in the jungle,” Choudhury said.
The options under the circumstances would be to send it to the zoo or any of the breeding centres once its condition improves, which may take some time, he said.
Veterinarians from the College of Veterinary Science, Guwahati also visited the CWRC on Sunday and carried out necessary treatment.
The tigress had entered the human habitation on November 20 creating panic among villagers. Villagers started pelting the big cat with stones once it entered the Kolong river inflicting the injuries. It was subsequently tranquilised and taken to the CWRC for treatment.
Police later arrested eight persons for their role in the stone pelting.
