Indian Navy Unveils 'INS Imphal', First Ship Named After Northeast City

 

GUWAHATI: In a significant development for India's naval capabilities, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled the crest of INS Imphal during a ceremony in New Delhi. 

This unveiling ceremony, attended by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and senior defence ministry officials, showcased INS Imphal as the first Indian Navy ship named after a city in the Northeast.

Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and constructed by MDL, INS Imphal is the third ship in the Navy's Project 15B, Visakhapatnam Class. Rajnath Singh expressed his delight at the ceremony, highlighting that INS Imphal stands as a hallmark of indigenous shipbuilding and is among the most technologically advanced warships globally. 

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also participated in the ceremony, expressing his pride in the achievement for India's maritime capabilities and its contribution to national defence. 

INS Imphal, as the pioneer among Visakhapatnam-class destroyer warships with an upgraded Brahmos missile, represents cutting-edge capabilities for the long-range defence of the nation. The warship's emblem includes Kangla Sanathong and Kangla Sha, paying homage to Manipur's rich military history and identity.
