Indian Hockey Team Secures Historic Olympic Bronze, Honors PR Sreejesh With A Thrilling 2-1 Victory Over Spain

GUWAHATI: India's men's hockey team delivered a memorable performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing a 2-1 victory over Spain to claim the bronze medal on August 8. This triumph marks India's 13th Olympic medal in hockey and the first time since 1972 that the nation has won back-to-back Olympic medals in the sport.

The match was particularly significant as it served as a fitting farewell to veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who played a crucial role in India's defense. Spain initially took the lead in the 18th minute through a penalty stroke converted by Marc Miralles. However, India responded with resilience, turning the game around in the second quarter.

Harmanpreet Singh emerged as the hero for India, scoring both goals within three minutes to overturn the deficit. His first goal came from a penalty corner just before halftime, leveling the score. Early in the third quarter, Harmanpreet struck again, this time after a successful referral, to give India a 2-1 lead.

The final quarter saw intense pressure from the Spanish side as they sought an equalizer. However, the Indian defense, anchored by Sreejesh, held firm. Spain earned multiple penalty corners in the dying moments of the match, but Sreejesh's heroics ensured that India preserved their narrow lead.

India's victory not only added another chapter to their storied Olympic history but also provided an emotional send-off for one of their most revered players. Sreejesh's performance in his final Olympic match was a testament to his enduring class and commitment to Indian hockey.

This bronze medal win is a significant achievement for the Indian hockey team, reinforcing their resurgence on the world stage and setting the stage for future success.
