India Ranks 159th In World Press Freedom Index 2024

GUWAHATI: India ranks 159th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index 2024, published by Reporters Without Borders. This ranking underscores the increasing violence against journalists, the concentration of media ownership, and the political alignment with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The 2024 index score of 31.28 reflects a downward trend compared to the 2023 score of 36.62, indicating a decline in press freedom. The indicators reveal troubling patterns: India is ranked 159th in political freedom (21.58), 157th in economic freedom (31.67), 143rd in legislative freedom (40.87), 156th in social freedom (33.33), and 162nd in security (28.97).
