GUWAHATI: India has emerged as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, marking a transformation in its electronics sector over the past decade. This was announced by Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday, February 4.

“India has made significant progress in mobile and electronics manufacturing,” Vaishnaw shared on social media platform X.

Much of this development has been attributed to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which propelled the country towards a decade of self-reliance. In 2014, India had just two mobile manufacturing units. Today, this number has surged to over 300 operational units nationwide.

The share of locally manufactured mobile phones has soared from 26% in 2014-15 to 99.2% in 2024, which has reduced the overall dependency on imports.

The manufacturing value of mobile phones in India has also skyrocketed from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24. Additionally, mobile phone exports, virtually negligible in 2014, have crossed ₹1,29,000 crore in 2024, underlining India’s growing footprint in the global market.

Currently, India produces over 325 to 330 million mobile phones annually, catering to a domestic market with nearly a billion active devices. The sector’s expansion has also been an employment generator, creating approximately 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs over the past decade.
