In the first half of January alone, India exported over 9,300 tonnes of coffee. Approximately 75% of India’s coffee production comprises Arabica and Robusta beans, primarily exported as unroasted coffee. However, a rising demand for value-added products like roasted and instant coffee has also added to the export boom.
Additionally, domestic coffee consumption has seen consistent growth, increasing from 84,000 tonnes in 2012 to 91,000 tonnes in 2023. This shift has been driven by the rise of café culture, higher disposable incomes, and changing preferences, with coffee becoming a staple beverage in both urban and rural areas.
India’s coffee production is concentrated in the ecologically rich Western and Eastern Ghats, which also serve as biodiversity hotspots. Karnataka remains the largest producer, contributing 248,020 metric tonnes in 2022-23, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The shaded plantations in these regions not only support the coffee industry but also help preserve the environment by maintaining ecological balance.
