The locomotives will be manufactured by Wabtec Locomotive, a joint venture between Indian Railways and U.S.-based Wabtec, at its Marhowra plant in Bihar. The company will supply the Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives, marking a significant step for India's locomotive manufacturing industry.

According to an official statement, the ES43ACmi locomotives feature a 4,500 HP Evolution Series engine known for its superior fuel efficiency and reliable performance in high-temperature environments. The Ministry of Railways highlighted that the Marhowra plant’s ability to export standard-gauge locomotives will expand India’s global footprint in manufacturing.

This project is also expected to foster local supplier growth and long-term job creation, further benefiting the Indian economy.

Established in 2018, the Marhowra plant has been delivering approximately 100 locomotives annually to Indian Railways, contributing 650 locomotives to the national fleet so far. Earlier this year, Wabtec Corporation invested Rs 150 crore to open a new manufacturing campus in Rohtak, Haryana, which will further produce rail components and other products for the future.
