IMD Warns Of Above-Normal Temperatures And Heatwaves Across India This Summer

GUWAHATI: India to experience an exceptionally hot summer, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting above-normal temperatures and an increased number of heatwave days across most parts of the country from April to June 2025. The IMD warns that central, eastern, and northern regions, along with parts of the east peninsula, will be most affected by extreme heat, while only some areas in the west peninsular and northwest India are expected to see near-normal temperatures.

The frequency of heatwaves is expected to rise significantly, particularly in April 2025, with central and eastern India likely to face prolonged periods of extreme heat. The IMD has urged authorities to implement heat action plans to protect vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, who are at greater risk of heat-related illnesses. Extreme temperatures may also put pressure on infrastructure, including power grids and water resources.

Despite the soaring temperatures, April 2025 is projected to bring normal levels of rainfall across the country, with precipitation expected to range between 88% and 112% of the Long Period Average (LPA). Normal to above-normal rainfall is likely in northwest, peninsular, and northeast India, while some areas may receive below-normal rainfall.
