Illegal Tablets Seized In Guwahati; Three Arrested

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Police arrested three individuals and seized illegal tablets, including Nitrazepam and SPS-PHEN, during a raid on Thursday, May 9. The arrests were made after a police team from Jalukbari OP acted on an intelligence tip-off and intercepted a couple near Adabari.

The couple, identified as Hiteswar Kalita and Mamoni Kalita, also known as Mamoni Begum, were found in possession of 24 Nitrazepam tablets. Following their detention, a subsequent house search led to the discovery of an additional 137 Nitrazepam tablets in the Government Railway Police (GRP) quarter occupied by Hiteswar Kalita's father, Retired Havildar Ratneswar Kalita.

Further interrogation of the detained couple revealed that Hiteswar Kalita is employed by the NGO 'Global Organization for Life Development' (GOLD) as a Peer Educator, working closely with the drug user community. However, his role with the NGO also provided a cover for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking. Both Hiteswar Kalita and Mamoni Kalita are undergoing Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) at Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

The interrogation also led police to another alleged drug peddler, Amarendra Kalita, who was detained in Pragjyotish Housing Complex, Ghoramara. Police recovered 1,093 tablets, including SPS-PHEN and Nitrazepam, from his possession.

Initial investigations suggest that the arrested individuals have connections with a contact in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, from whom they receive drug consignments through pharmacies and other channels.
