Illegal Burmese Supari And LPG Cylinders Seized In Guwahati

 

GUWAHATI: In response to a tip-off regarding the illegal transportation of Burmese Supari (dried betel nut), a collaborative operation was executed by the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam and the local police from Basistha Police Station. The operation, conducted yesterday evening in Guwahati, yielded significant results.

Around 10 PM on August 11, the joint operation team intercepted a truck at Beherbari, within the jurisdiction of Bashishtha Police Station. During the operation, a total of 28 bags of contraband Burmese Supari were seized, amounting to a weight of 1400 kg.

The illicit betel nut was cleverly concealed in a separate compartment within the truck. The individuals responsible for the transportation, identified as brothers Ramen Basumatary and Dipak Basumatary from Sarma Kata under the jurisdiction of Basistha Police Station, were promptly apprehended at the scene.

The City Police of Guwahati has undertaken further investigations into the matter to unravel the full extent of the operation and any potential network involved.

In a parallel development, joint teams consisting of the Assam STF and the Bureau of Investigation (Economic Offences), Assam, carried out another raid in the early hours of August 12. The raid targeted a grocery shop located in Ghoramara, within the jurisdiction of Hatigaon Police Station.

The operation resulted in the confiscation of 43 illegally stored and hazardous LPG cylinders. The owner of the grocery shop, identified as Jogesh Kalita, was taken into custody following the raid.

A case has been registered at the Bureau of Investigation (Economic Offences) Police Station under Case No. 20/2023, and an ongoing investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of the illegal activities.
