Street Vendors In Guwahati's Ulubari Asked To Close Shop To Ease Congestion

GUWAHATI: Street vendors operating near KFC in Ulubari have been issued a warning to vacate their stalls, with the deadline set for the night of January 8. This move comes as part of ongoing efforts by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to clear unauthorised vending zones across the city.

At least 16 stalls in the area are affected by the directive.

Talking to GPlus, a street vendor in Ulubari said, “Without any prior notice, they came around 3:00 PM in three vehicles and told us to vacate by 10:00 PM today. We have been working here for several years, but now they want us out immediately. Where will we go? How will we earn our living?”

Another street vendor talking to GPlus said, "We are ready to follow rules, but they need to give us some time and a place to work in the meantime. Otherwise, it is our families who will suffer. They have not told us where we can set up our stalls next. All they said was to leave the area by tonight. We are not against the rules, but until they give us another place, how can we leave just like that?”

Talking to GPlus, a senior official from GMC official said, "These street vendors are illegal, and their presence causes unnecessary chaos and traffic congestion. Therefore, we have asked them to vacate the area. However, we are aware of the situation and are surveying 81 locations across Guwahati to create proper, organised vending zones."
