Ill-fated Dima Hasao Coal Mine Unauthorised, Police Arrest Owner

GUWAHATI: Police have arrested one Punish Nunisa, owner of the coal mine in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso, located in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, where 15 miners are feared trapped after it was flooded on Monday, January 6.

Dima Hasao district Superintendent of Police, Mayank Kumar Jha, told GPlus that Nunisa was arrested after the Assam Minerals Development Corporation complained that the mine is unauthorised. “We made the arrest based on the complaint,” Jha said.

A case (No. No: 02/2025) has been registered at the Umrangso Police Station under Sections 3(5)/105 BNS and Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, in connection with the incident.

While reports indicate 15 miners are trapped, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has released names of nine.

The Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF and SDRF besides police are carrying out a rescue operation while a team of Navy divers is en route to the site from Vishkhapatnam.
