GUWAHATI: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sent a message to her supporters during a recent social media interaction with family members of Awami League party leaders. She said, “Allah has kept me alive for a reason. I am coming.”

The virtual exchange took place with her camera turned off throughout the session. Her statement has been taken as a direct response to the ongoing political developments in Bangladesh, where the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has been in power since August 2024. Hasina resigned from her position as prime minister and left the country following mass protests that led to the deaths of hundreds of demonstrators, many of whom were students.
In the interaction, Hasina further accused the current regime of turning Bangladesh from a “model of development” into a “terrorist country.” She alleged that members of her party, along with policemen, journalists, lawyers, and artists, were being targeted and attacked. "Our politicians and workers are being martyred in a manner which cannot be expressed," she said.
She also criticised the state of press freedom in the country. “Rapes, murders, dacoities, nothing can be reported. And if it is reported, that TV channel or newspaper will be targeted,” she stated.
Taking aim at Muhammad Yunus, Hasina further accused him of exploiting the people through microfinance and harbouring ambitions for power. “He lent small amounts at high interest rates to lead a lavish life abroad... Then his lust for power developed which is now resulting in Bangladesh’s burning,” she said.
Meanwhile, Yunus, at the recent BIMSTEC summit, had reportedly urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prevent Hasina from issuing what he described as “inflammatory statements” that could destabilise Bangladesh. He also raised the issue of Hasina’s extradition request pending with India.
