GUWAHATI: A huge statue of Maniram Dewan is set to be constructed at the Cinnamara Tea Estate in Assam’s Jorhat.

For this, the foundation stone was laid by the Assam Assembly Speaker and Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami on Sunday, February 9. He also laid the foundation stone of a park during the occasion.

It is to be mentioned that Maniram Dewan was the first Indian commercial tea planter and freedom fighter who was martyred during the freedom struggle.

As per Assam Tribune, while speaking during the programme Goswami said, “A larger than life statue of Dewan along with a park in his (Dewan) honour will be set up in the garden established by the pioneer entrepreneur and a patriot.”

He further added that the statue will be massive in size so that it will be visible from the road.

“The statue along with plaque detailing his (Dewan) life story would be very large, like the one of Dr Nelson Mandela, inspiring wonder and awe,” the Speaker mentioned.

Apart from this, a recreational park with a food plaza will also be set up at the location which will be developed in to a tourist site.
