Himanta Biswa Sarma defends Citizenship Bill to avert Kashmir-like situation in Assam

GUWAHATI: Assam Finance Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 and said that its passing is important so that Assam does not end up in a Kashmir-like situation in the future.

He echoed Home Minister, Rajnath Singh’s comments and said that everyone has to understand that the Bill is not just for Assam but the burden of refugees will be shared by the entire country.

Sarma added that the Bill will protect 17 important assembly seats of Assam from going to the All India United Democratic Front led by Badruddin Ajmal.

The Bill was passed by Lok Sabha on January 8 and was stalled in the Rajya Sabha following strong opposition from the Congress along with other parties.

The Health and Finance minister spoke at length at the ‘India’s North East: From Periphery to the Core’ in Delhi at Vivekananda International Foundation on January 11.

He said that the northeastern region is no longer in the periphery, it is at the core. The states in the northeast have become the “core of the imagination. It is the zone of potential.”
