GUWAHATI: The sudden spell of rain and thunderstorms followed by hailstorms across Guwahati and Assam wreaked havoc on Sunday causing widespread damage to life and property.

Guwahati witnessed heavy rainfall on Sunday late afternoon, leaving some parts of the city without electricity and inundated. The rainfall was soon followed by a hailstorm in Guwahati at around 11:15 PM.

Most of the area was quickly covered by a thick blanket of hailstones. The storm pursued for around 10-15 minutes before coming to a climax. Social media was soon filled with pictures of hailstorms from across Guwahati and nearby areas.
Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati was one of the worst affected by the rainfall as the ceilings of the airport soon started leaking and some parts of it soon collapsed.
Videos of water leaking inside the airport and ceilings collapsing soon started making rounds on social media.
The LGBI Airport later issued a statement saying, “Due to heavy downpour and wind, flight operations got affected due to adverse weather conditions today evening. Approach road was blocked due to the uprooting of trees. Roof outlets heavily overflowed and water was instilled inside the terminal building. Outside the terminal building, a small portion of the ceiling fell open due to the pressure of water and wind. There is no injury or damage. A total of six flights got diverted to Agartala and Kolkata due to adverse weather conditions. Operations resumed normal now.”

Various areas such as Zoo Road, Ulubari, Nabin Nagar, Maligaon, and many other parts of the city were left without electricity for long hours, as per reports. Talking to GPlus, a senior official from APDCL said, "Due to fallen trees, cables were cut off in major lines, but we fixed it yesterday. Today, only a few areas have fuses, which we are currently fixing."
Waterlogging was also reported in several parts of the city, causing distress to residents and commuters.
Garbhanga Forest Reserve also reported uprooted trees that blocked the road, stranding commuters for hours. Video reports stated that huge trees fell due to the storm, crushing vehicles and halting all communications for hours.
