The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday, August 16, highlighted the rise in physical and verbal aggression on doctors and healthcare staff in government hospitals.

The directive mandates that if any violence occurs against a healthcare worker while on duty, the head of the institute must file an Institutional FIR within 6 hours of the incident.

The directive comes in the wake of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

The incident has led to outrage among the medical fraternity across the country and even among people who are demanding quick justice.

The Indian Medical Association has called for a 24-hour halt of services from August 17.
