GUWAHATI: While high heels have long been associated with fashion, elegance, and professional attire, many women face significant health and social challenges due to prolonged use of these stylish yet uncomfortable shoes. From chronic pain to workplace dress code pressures, high heels remain both a fashion statement and a source of discomfort for millions of women worldwide.

Heels are a fashionable footwear choice that complement a variety of dresses and occasions. Be it a party, casual event or a formal occasion, there is a type of heel to accentuate your attire. Block Heels, Cuban Heels, Cone Heels, Flared Heels, Decorative Heels, Spool Heels, Stiletto Heels, Platform Heels, or Wedge Heels, there is always something for everyone.

Heels also differ by heel heights. Some are low, high, mid or even ultra-high.

Speaking to GPlus, Ankita. H, a resident of Ulubari said, “I wear them keeping in mind the occasion and outfit. We do look good in them, and generally I have no issues with such footwear.”

However, talking to GPlus, Rita Bargayary, a resident of Anil Nagar said, “I love heels, and I wear them on various occasions. But, they do at times cause issues or discomfort.”

However, wearing high heels for extended periods can lead to severe health problems. High heels alter the natural shape of the foot, leading to bunions, hammertoes, and blisters. Constant pressure on the toes also increases the risk of nerve damage. High heels shift body weight forward, putting excessive strain on the lower back and knees, potentially causing chronic pain and posture problems. The unstable nature of high heels increases the likelihood of ankle sprains, fractures, and falls, making them a risky choice, especially for women who walk or stand for long hours. Prolonged wear can restrict blood flow, increasing the risk of varicose veins, leg swelling, and circulation problems.

Talking to GPlus, a senior orthopaedic from Guwahati said,” Wearing high-heels frequently and for extended periods of time may lead to various issues such as plantar fasciitis, hammertoe, knee-pain, Achilles tendinopathies, Anthralgia, Metatarsalgia or such other major problems.”

“Over time, joints can be pulled out of alignment. If you wear high heels every day, your muscles and tendons can actually shorten and contract, making it difficult to walk. So, we generally do not recommend wearing them frequently to anyone or to avoid for people with movement problems,” he further added.

Despite the health concerns, many women choose to or continue to wear high heels due to societal expectations and workplace norms. In many industries, especially corporate offices, hospitality, and fashion, women are expected to wear heels as part of a ‘professional appearance’. Some companies have even enforced strict dress codes requiring women to wear high heels. High heels are often seen as a symbol of femininity and confidence, putting pressure on women to wear them for social events, dates, and formal occasions. Women who choose flats or sneakers over high heels may be perceived as less elegant or professional, highlighting a double standard in fashion expectations.

With growing awareness of these issues, many women and organisations are advocating for choices that benefit them. Fashion brands are introducing ergonomic footwear that combines comfort with style, such as block heels, wedges, and orthopedic shoes. Many countries have seen legal actions against companies enforcing high-heel mandates, encouraging more flexible workplace policies. Medical experts continue to educate women on the long-term effects of high heels, promoting the importance of foot health and ergonomic footwear.

While high heels remain a popular fashion choice, the need for comfort, health, and inclusivity in footwear is becoming a global conversation. Women are increasingly challenging outdated norms, advocating for a world where fashion does not come at the cost of well-being.
