The current PM2.5 concentration is alarmingly 2.5 times higher than the recommended limit listed in World Health Organisation’s (WHO) air quality guidelines.
Long periods of exposure to these PM2.5 levels can bring about serious health issues for people, especially children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.
The highest levels of pollution have been reported in Ambikagiri Nagar with an AQI of 110, while Bongshar and Pan Bazar both registered an AQI of 107. The new report contradicts with the AQI from the previous day, when November 1 had shown a noticeable decline in pollution levels compared to last year.
Keeping with the ongoing Diwali celebrations, health officials are requesting citizens to adopt precautions to mitigate the current air-quality crisis in the city. Additionally, environmental activists are also pressing the authorities to implement stricter regulations and impositions to reduce this sudden spike in air pollution.
