Guwahati Wakes Up To Cold, Foggy Morning As AQI Drops On January 23

GUWAHATI: Guwahati residents woke up to an unanticipated cold and foggy morning, with visibility dropping to approximately 0.40 miles (0.65 kilometers) and overcast conditions prevailing, on Thursday, January 23.

The day's maximum temperature is expected to reach around 24°C approximately along with a minimum temperature of 14°C today, according to the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC).

The foggy onset was surprising, especially considering the recent rise in temperatures following the Magh Bihu festival. Historically, the period leading up to and during Magh Bihu, celebrated in mid-January, is marked by cooler weather patterns. However, in 2025, Guwahati experienced a notable increase in temperatures post-Bihu, with a one-day high reaching up to 27.8°C (82°F), on January 18.

Residents have been seen donning winter attire and also lighting bonfires in the foggy weather, to beat the cold.

Additionally, Guwahati’s Air Quality Index (AQI) soared to 166 on Thursday morning, firmly placing it in the "Unhealthy" category. This alarming figure signifies a serious deterioration in air quality, exceeding the average for the state of Assam by over 1.08 times.
