Guwahati to Witness Traffic Jams During Elections, Traffic Police Issues Warning

GUWAHATI: The traffic woes of Guwahati residents are set to be escalated owing to the ensuing Assam assembly elections 2021.

This was informed to G Plus by Pranjit Bora, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), while speaking about the sudden increase in traffic jams in Guwahati.

“Guwahati city’s road infrastructure is limited and therefore traffic congestion is bound to happen in some areas. People will have to bear with it. Guwahati police is trying its best to minimise this inconvenience,” DCP Pranjit Bora said.

With the Assam Assembly Elections 2021 just a few days away, campaigning and rallying in Guwahati is going on in full swing. Whenever a campaign rally is carried out or a star campaigner visits the state, roads in Guwahati witness massive jams. Convoys of ministers and buses filled with commuters to accommodate the visit have become an everyday sight.

When asked why the entire city comes to a halt because of one rally, the police official said, “Election is a democratic process which cannot be changed, political parties will take out rallies and convoys for their respective campaigns, they may even go door-to-door, we cannot stop that.”

DCP Pranjit Bora also hinted towards shortage in manpower in the traffic police department saying, “We cannot deploy additional traffic police personnel just because of electoral processes. However, to fill in the sanctioned traffic posts (mainly in areas like- MG Road, DC point, and AT road) we are adjusting the manpower within our own resources.”

A route change list has been released by the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) to help avoid traffic jams during the submission of nominations for Assam Elections’ 2021 on March 18 - 19 (8 AM - 6 PM) for people to follow.
