Guwahati Summer Draining The Life Out Of Its Residents

GUWAHATI: Guwahati has been experiencing extremely hot weather conditions for the last few days. On July 17 the temperature soared to 37°C, but because of humidity it felt like the temperature felt like 46°C during the day time.

Even though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted a partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain in their daily forecast, the city witnessed an extremely hot and humid day, with the minimum temperature rising to 27.2° Celsius, a 1.3° C departure from normal.

Speaking to GPlus, a regular officegoer at Lachit Nagar stated, "The heat is unbearable today. I'll most probably get the flu due to the constantly changing weather."

"It's probably worse for the people working outside like the street vendors, traffic personnel and others. The hot and humid weather has also caused a rise in dust pollution causing a rise in allergies," she said further.

A class 12 student said, "It's very difficult to go to classes in this weather. Most of the fans in our classes don't work properly, and traveling outside is incredibly difficult. The ACs in the new Green buses also don't work most of the time or there are just too many people that we don't get any relief."

Another person from Ulubari said, "I have to stay out for most parts of the day because of my work. There is no washroom, no shade. I am scared that I will get UTIs or heat stroke in this weather."

The city had been witnessing heavy rains and thunderstorms in the past few weeks which had caused a drop in temperatures and provided a temporary relief from the summer heat. However, the abrupt shift from cool to sweltering conditions has left residents grappling with the rapid changes.
