Guwahati: SBI Official and City Car Dealer Convicted For Counterfeit

GUWAHATI: A State Bank of India (SBI) official and the owner of a car dealer in the city were convicted by a CBI court on September 4 and sentenced to four years in jail for conspiring and obtaining more than 100 loans worth approximately Rs. 2 crore by using false made-up names. 

Based on a report by The Assam Tribune, the accused have been identified as Romen Das, the SBI bank official and Pratul Kumar Ghosh, owner of M/s Ghosh Brothers.

Das while working as the branch manager of SBI Sonakuchi HPC Ltd. branch conspired with Ghosh and sanctioned 86 second hand car loans and 63 ‘big buy’ loans to made-up people. These loans were sanctioned on the basis of several forged and false documents, which were arranged and submitted by Ghosh. The total worth of loans granted comes to Rs. 1.90 crore and the borrowers of these loans were apparently noted as workers at the Northeast Frontier Railway. 

The CBI took up this case after the SBI vigilance cell detected irregularities. 

Das has been convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act and four IPC sections and Ghosh has been convicted under four IPC sections, 120 (b), 420, 468 and 471.
