GUWAHATI: On the occasion of their 25th Durga Puja celebration, the Santipur Sluice Gate Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee is gearing up to present an enchanting "Purana Haveli"-themed pandal. A budget of approximately ₹21 lakh has been allocated to bring this intricate theme to life.
This year's Durga Puja in Santipur Sluice Gate is also set to incorporate a laser show, adding a modern touch to the traditional festivities. Notably, a significant portion of the work, approximately 60 per cent, has already been completed.
For the construction of this unique pandal, the materials chosen include thermocol, bamboo, and plywood. Speaking to GPlus, a Santipur Sluice Gate Sarbajanin Durga Puja committee member revealed that this grand ‘haveli’ replica would stand tall at around 30 feet, promising a breathtaking spectacle for devotees.
The committee member further said, “In light of the many devastations and challenges that the world faces, our theme aims to convey a poignant depiction of ancient ruins through our 'purana haveli' (old mansion) themed pandal.”
The creative mind behind this splendid theme is Shambhu Sinha, a seasoned event planner hailing from Kolkata, who has been an integral part of the creative process behind this year's Durga Puja pandal. Speaking to GPlus, Sinha shared, "In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the puja at Sluice Gate, we've adorned the deity with a shimmering silver-white appearance, making it even more special."
Sinha also emphasised the essence of this year's theme, drawing on the rich traditions of the past. He explained, "Many have forgotten about the 'Adi Puja', where the puja was celebrated exclusively within the family. In earlier times, this traditional puja was conducted at home, uniting family members, even those who lived far away, as they gathered to celebrate together. The 'Purana Haveli' concept symbolises a place where people unite to witness Maa Durga, as it did in the past."
"This marks my fourth year contributing to the ideation and execution of the pandal. My previous involvements with this pandal were in 2015, 2016, and 2018," Sinha further told GPlus.
In previous years, the Santipur Sluice Gate Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee has showcased various innovative and artistic themes including fort-themed pandals, representations of the Titanic, and even renditions of the White House. These themes have consistently drawn attention and admiration from puja enthusiasts, making the Santipur Sluice Gate Durga Puja a much-anticipated event for the local community.
