GUWAHATI: The Network Planning Group (NPG) held its 66th meeting last week in New Delhi on February 27, when several key infrastructure projects across India were assessed, including the Guwahati Ring Road project.

The meeting was chaired by Rajeev Singh Thakur, the Additional Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), and five projects were evaluated, including Guwahati’s Ring Road project, along with two other highway projects in Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh and two projects of the railways in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The Guwahati Ring Road project aims to a build a Ring Road of approximately 64 km around the city of Guwahati, including an elevated structure at Jorabat and a new bridge across Brahmaputra, in a bid to decongest the city and the major junctions in the Kamrup Metro district while reducing travel time, vehicle operating costs and providing smooth traffic flow, along with offering a solution to congestion and contributing to overall economic development by improving connectivity in the city.
The project was first announced by the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma last year in 2023 and the work on the project is expected to start before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections this year is estimated to be completed in three years till 2027.
