GUWAHATI: Guwahati police detained 94 individuals for drunk driving, 56 drug traffickers, and removed 185 abandoned vehicles from city roads in January, under the context of a “Swachatta Mission” implemented in every police station across the city.

This was revealed by the Joint Commissioner of Police at a press conference held on Monday, February 3.
On New Year’s Eve alone, 94 people were apprehended for drunk driving as part of heightened road safety measures. Measuring a parallel effort against drug-related crimes, police seized narcotics worth over ₹6 crore and arrested 56 traffickers.
Along with the prior developments, the city police also tackled theft by arresting 156 burglars and recovering 169 stolen mobile phones. Responding to public grievances, the police had received 653 messages for such crimes, including 135 complaints against law enforcement personnel.
Another attribute mentioned by Jain was the rescue of 40 mission persons in the city.
Additionally, the police towed 185 old, abandoned vehicles to reduce the city’s overall congestion, either by allocating them to designated parking spaces, or returning them to their rightful owners.
Finally, to curb illegal bike stunts, 28 individuals were detained for dangerous riding. A new bike patrolling system has also been introduced to enhance street surveillance, with plans to recruit 40 more officers to improve traffic management.
So far in 2025, Guwahati has registered 550 new cases, reflecting the city’s ongoing challenges with crime and public safety.
