GUWAHATI: Basistha Police in Guwahati on Thursday, March 13 arrested five persons for collecting large sums of money from vendors at the Beltola market. Police said the lessee of the market is supposed to collect Rs 200 each from the vendors daily, but those deployed for the collection were taking much more than that causing distress to the vendors.

The operation was led by the Officer-in-Charge of the Basistha police station, Kapil Pathak.
According to a fishmonger in the market, the accused used to demand amounts as high as ₹3,000 while others complained that they were being asked to pay three-four times more than the official rate.
Those arrested have been identified as Chandan Barman ( 32 yrs), Biraj Das ( 38 yrs), Tapan Deka ( 40 yrs) Nayanjyoti Das ( 35 yrs) and Anish Mech ( 42 Yrs ).
Further investigation is underway.
