Guwahati: Old Panbazar Flyover Closed For Demolition

GUWAHATI: The old Panbazar Flyover has been barricaded and closed for vehicular movement from March 9.

People travelling through the stretch will now have to use the other flyover which was mainly used as a one-way road for commuters travelling towards Vishal and Paltan Bazar, but will now be converted into a two-way road till the new Flyover is built.

Speaking to GPlus, a source from the Railways stated, "the target to finish the flyover is nine months and so the flyover will be closed for that amount of time."

It was earlier announced in February that the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) had taken a decision to demolish the 58-year-old flyover and construct a new bridge with increased height.

The decision was taken as the Indian Railway Schedule of Dimensions guidelines state that the distance between the track and the Flyover should be 6.25 metres, while the old Pan Bazar flyover is at a height of 4.61 metres.

Moreover, the Indian Railways is also facing challenges due to insufficient vertical and horizontal clearance of the old Panbazar Flyover, as it caused a permanent speed restriction of 15 kmph to be imposed which affected train movement.
