GUWAHATI: The services of the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) will be suspended from January 1, 2022, due to the construction of the second medical college in Guwahati. The construction of the college will begin at the current MMCH site.
The patients currently undergoing treatment at the MMCH will be shifted to Pandu First Referral Unit (FRU) and the Dhirenpara hospital, both of which will be run by the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
This was informed by Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma on December 19.
The construction of a new, and Guwahati’s second medical college is set to be completed within three years. A 12 story building of the new medical college will be constructed at the premises of the present Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH), facing the Brahmaputra river. The medical college will be constructed at a cost of over Rs 800 crores, which also includes an 800 bedded general hospital at the MMCH.
When completed, the new medical college will presumably be the largest medical college in Eastern India.
The project will be a merger of the present MMCH and the Kalapahar TB Hospital campus. The Sarabhati flyover in Guwahati is currently under construction, connecting the Kalapahar Hospital to the Nepali Mandir in Paltanbazar, to reduce the travel time between both wings of the hospitals.
