WATCH: Guwahati Household Suffers Amid India’s Champions Trophy Celebration

GUWAHATI: As India basked in the glory of their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 victory over New Zealand on Sunday, March 9, celebrations in Guwahati took a disastrous turn when an out-of-control firecracker landed inside a residence in Uzanbazar, sparking fire and causing property damage worth approximately ₹1 lakh.

The incident occurred amidst the revelry, with bursting crackers and public celebrations taking over the city’s streets. However, for Abhigyan, the homeowner who bore the brunt of the recklessness, the night was anything but celebratory.

"Fortunately, no one was injured, but a lot of property was damaged," Abhigyan told GPlus. Expressing his frustration, he blamed the increasing lawlessness in the area. "The surroundings of my residence have turned into a drunkards’ den, and this was a direct consequence of it."

Despite the severity of the situation, no legal complaint was filed, as confirmed by an official from the Latasil police station. Meanwhile, the fire, which could have escalated into a major disaster, was reportedly doused before the arrival of the Fire & Emergency Safety Services (F&ESS).

This incident raises concerns over the lack of regulation during public celebrations and the apparent failure of law enforcement in curbing unruly behaviour. With firecrackers often misused in densely populated areas, authorities have yet again failed to enforce preventive measures.

While the nation rejoiced in a cricketing triumph, for at least one Guwahati household, the night ended in chaos rather than celebration.
