GUWAHATI: The accused in the hit-and-run case from January 26 was granted bail on the same day of arrest.
On January 26, a 54-year-old man succumbed to grievous injuries after being struck by an unidentified vehicle, which hastily fled the scene, leaving the victim unattended in Guwahati.
A case was registered under Basistha PS case no. 62/24 under sections 279/304(A) IPC.
The investigation unveiled that the suspect's vehicle resembled a police vehicle, causing initial uncertainty about its authenticity. After much efforts, the police narrowed down their search to a private SUV.
On February 9, they arrested Arin Kataki, a 20-year-old BA/LLB student from USTM, Meghalaya, residing at Rupkonwor Path, VIP road, Six Mile, Dispur. Kataki confessed to his involvement in the hit-and-run incident.
However, talking to GPlus, a police official from Basistha Police Station said, "The accused got bail on the same day."
On February 10, 10 cars were seized in Guwahati for fitting sirens, using fake number plates, and possessing fake assembly car passes, shedding light on the prevalence of such deceptive practices in the city.
